A BRIEF NOTE ON THE PARISH COUNCIL
Origin: Don Bosco Church at Lingarajapuram was recognized officially as a Parish on October 1996. The Parish Council came to effect on 1st December 1996.
The Parish Priest nominated 13 members to the Parish Council based on their contribution to the Parish activities in the past. They include The Parish Priest (President), Mr. Vincent (secretary) Mr. Stephen Xavier (treasurer), Mr. Remigius, Mr. Raju, Mr. Benny, Mr. David, Mr. Sundarajan, Mr. John Baptist, Mr. Arokiaswamy, Mr. Lourduraj, Mr. Highland, Mr. Cyril and Mr. Arun (Youth Leader).
Membership: The Parish Council members are generally nominated by the President.
Meeting Schedule: The Parish Council meets every first Sunday of the month. But on need basis it can be convened at any time. The meeting takes place in the Parish Office around 6.45 pm.
Activities of Parish Council: All Parish activities are planned and carried out by the Parish Council.
- Deciding on Mass timings, frequency and Language.
- Planning for all parish feasts, which include, fixing Mass timings, deciding on the main celebrant and the con -celebrants for Mass, welcoming Chief Guest, band arrangement, decorations in the church, allocating responsibility to various groups and individuals.
- Planning the First Holy Communion and Confirmation services and the Catechism Classes for the children.
- Planning the social activities like evening tuition for poor children, Crèche, Tailoring Class, health clinic, Computer class etc.
- Planning and executing spiritual activities like Convention, one day seminars, special preaching during feast days and important days, Holy week celebrations, full day Eucharistic Adoration, Way of the Cross, prayer meetings in and around the parish etc.
- Be in control of groups like Vincent de Paul, Legion of Mary, Charismatic Group, and Youth Group etc. The activities and the complaints from these groups are reviewed periodically and necessary course of action is taken.
- Giving recognition to the best performers in the SSLC Exams.
For major activities of the parish the parish volunteers and elders extend their helping hand. It includes the new Church Inauguration programme, parish feast etc.
Reconstitution of Parish Council: After 56th Parish Council meeting which worked for nearly five years, the Parish Council was reconstituted on 10th June, 2001. Few old team members were retained and new members were nominated for the Parish Council. There were 17 members in the newly constituted Parish Council.
We just completed 101 Parish Council Meetings till date.
The promise made by the new members is as follows:
"I ...(name) …will hereby promise that I will cooperate with the Parish Priest in all respect for the betterment of the Parish as a member of Parish Council. I will keep up the secrecy of the proceedings of the meetings. I will be faithful in attending the meetings and I will be at the service of the church whenever my service is required. During the meetings I will keep the decorum of the Parish Council. I will accept the final decision of the President.
